 'Year and a Day' is a traditional term for the study undertaken by the novice Witch, Wiccan, Pagan, and probably other Pagan paths too. It lasts for a Year and a Day before initiation into the Craft...

This of course varies for each tradition, and I can't profess to know anything about a lot of them!
