You should get yourself a book that has those lettered tabs along the side. Each time you have a symbol in a dream and you look it up, write down the meaning and your interpretation in your own dream dictionary.

Also, watch
out for synchronicity in waking life - if your dream symbols come out of nowhere,
they may be giving you clues :)
There are
lots of dream dictionaries around… you should use them as guides to
understanding your own dreams. Try reading a dream dictionary for ideas on the
